PIAZZA MAGGIORE Bologna’s Piazza Maggiore began as the “platea communis”, the place where people gathered and the market was held. It was one of the most important urban projects in Medieval Bologna, built to give prominence to the seat of city government and create a place for the market
THE 2 TOWERS Both of them leaning, are the symbol of the city and the most prominent of the Towers of Bologna. They are located at the intersection of the roads that lead to the five gates of the old ring wall (mura dei torresotti). The taller one is called the Asinelli while the smaller but more leaning tower is called the Garisenda. Their names derive from the families which are traditionally credited with having constructed the towers between 1109 and 1119.
PRENDIPARTE TOWER The tower has 11 floors and a rooftop terrace. The first three levels consist of the living room, the bedroom loft and bathroom, and the kitchen/dining room. The name Prendiparte, which means “take sides,” refers to the powerful Bolognese family that built the tower in the 12th century to serve as a military post both for defense and attack (the Prendiparte were on the Pope’s side during the time when the town was divided between those who wanted independence from the Catholic Church and those who wanted to remain under its rule).
THE CANAL Bologna’s canals aren’t nearly as famous, possibly because many of them were covered, and later, roads and buildings were built over them, leaving most of these medieval channels hidden from view
At the end of the tour you will take a walk back to your hotel or else hang out in the city center
